Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills is a beautiful young adult romance novel. When Claudia Wallace accidentally overhears a private breakup conversation between 2 fellow classmates, she had no idea the journey she was about to embark on. Later, Claudia is partnered with one of the girls to write a paper together. The teacher is less than pleased and makes the girls audition for the school play, A Midsummer Night's Dream. As she works on the play, her world of friends and experiences grow.
Claudia is simply the most realistic girl I have ever read about. She attends a prestigious all girl school, not because her family is rich, but because her father is a teacher there. I have yet to met someone who isn't attending a school on scholarship or without any financial aid. She isn't popular but she isn't an outcast either. At the beginning of the story, she simply existed. As the story progresses, we see her make friends with other girls, who are rich, as well as a couple of boys from the neighboring all boy school. Claudia is a normal teenager, who has a best friend, does about average in school, plays video games, and has an obsession with a boy band. Claudia also has insecurities and those insecurities make it very, very easy to connect with her.
Claudia's relationship with her parents as well as her siblings made me envious as I did not and do not have that closeness. I also do not have the closeness of a best friend like Claudia does with Zoe and later with Iris. Her friendship with Gideon and Noah, however, reminds me of my relationship with my husband and a close male friend of ours. Again I was able to connect with the story through them. Gideon is quite simply put a brilliant character created by Mills.
I definitely rate this book 5 out of 5 stars, because holy cow it was amazing. I laughed and I cried. I sympathized and I really wanted to play Battle Quest. I already loved A Midsummer Night's Dream, but I think I will go back and re-read it based off of the synopses I learned from Claudia. Strongly encourage anyone, especially teenage females, who love literature, gaming, and have insecurities concerning friends, family, or boyfriends to read this book.
