I have enjoyed reading Anne Rice ever since my friend Angela Crum (author of The Blood Chronicles Revamped which absolutely should be read) said they were a part of her inspiration. I go to Angela about many things book-related but especially vampire related. Of course I knew the movies were based on the books as well but I had never read them. I so desperately wanted to read them and so I did. And I fell in love.
Book five Memnoch The Devil finds Lestat in a hotel bar observing his latest victim as well as having a conversation with fledgling David. Lestat has felt that someone has been stalking him. Following the murder of his victim, Lestat is visited by his ghost who asks him to watch over his daughter, Dora. Along the way, Lestat's stalker appears and says he is Memnoch The Devil. He will show Lestat Heaven, Hell, and everything inbetween in order to get Lestat to agree to be his helper. But helper of what?
I normally do not like books fully focused around religion, but this was actually very beautifully written. I found myself engulfed in the story. I will say that there was little action. Most of the story was a story within a story. Which allowed for a very active to imagination. However the lack of action was a little hard to get through. I found myself having to stop a few times.
I also have a hard time with Lestat. Its not the fact that he falls in love with every single person that we meet. Its that he never seems to learn his lesson. I will say that if I had Louis around who is always doom and gloom, it seems, then I would probably not listen to him either. The one person I thought for sure that Lestat would listen to was David, and even he was ignored.
I rate this novel 4 out of 5 stars. Mainly because I simply can't stand when Lestat is in full on brat mode. Well I should say in super brat mode as he is always a brat.
