We left off with Charlotte Holmes as she was invited to stay with Mrs. Watson, be her companion, and continue her work as Sherlock Holmes. So far, she has managed to be a success when someone inspected turns up at Baker Street.
Lady Ingram, wife of Lord Ingram, Charlotte's friend, has a problem and needs "Sherlock" to find someone. The someone in question gives Charlotte a stir as it is none other than her half brother.
While dealing with the case, Charlotte also handles a proposition of marriage, and a stranger giving attention to get sister Livia. How in the world is her brother tied to all three occurrences?
I found the second novel of Sherry Thomas's to be just as good as her first. However, it is hard to find a sequel that will make that first love be a shade paler, and I must commend her for an amazing job well done. I simply couldn't put it down. I, especially, enjoyed the smaller mystery that Thomas had Charlotte looking into. That of a young woman who believed her housekeeper was poisoning her. It allowed our minds to relax from the overall mystery and keep us interested in what twists were coming up next.
My favorite parts about this novel were the characters. Each was detailed and left like a real person to whom I have been acquainted with all my life. I really enjoyed the fact that Mrs. Watson and her niece were more "fleshed" out, giving them more animation and action than simply being wall flowers or background noise. Livia was also given life as she was attempting to write her Sherlock Holmes stories. However, the fear of leaving when the Season is over is very real, and her anxiety made my anxiety go haywire.
Overall I rate the novel 4 out of 5 stars because in the end I had an inkling I knew what the mysteries were all about. I didn't quite expect it to end the way it did but I wasn't surprised by the story Charlotte told. I have already pre-ordered the third book.
