Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

I have to say that I was slightly disappointed with this new series of Clare's. Maybe it was because of the hype of the other 2 shadowhunters series, maybe this first book didn't capture my interest as quickly.

The first thing that bothered me was Julian's relationship with his younger siblings and uncle Arthur. I felt, at the end of City of Heavenly Fire, that maybe the uncle would guide them and play a significant role for the Blackthorns. However, I was upset to learn about his condition. I, also, was upset that Julian was more father than brother. A fact that is reflected on at various points in the story.

The second thing that bothered was the complex relationship between Julian and Emma. Don't get me wrong, I know that it's easy to fall in love with your best friend, but isn't it also possible to fall out of love. It seems like Clare spends more time with either a forbidden love or an unrequited one-sided love. That took some of the enjoyment out of the story for me.

The plot of the murders and the involvement of the Fae, I did enjoy. I was curious about how that relationship would go, and I wasn't disappointed with Mark's return, nor the family's reaction. This is one particular scene i completely skipped over but I didn't feel that I lost anything. It was mostly a personal preference skip so don't feel that you should.

Overall, I rated the novel 4 out of 5 stars because plot wins over relationships. Plus the ending was actually quite good. I can't wait to start  the second book, and my pre-order has already been issued.
