The Chess Queen Enigma by Colleen Gleason (Spoilers for Spiritglass Charade)

Everyone should know how I feel about this series by now. So it shouldn't be a surprise that I rate this novel 4 out of 5 stars. Gleason is still creating an amazing environment with the Stoker and Holmes girls that makes it all seem plausible.

In The Chess Queen Enigma, Evaline and Mina are assigned to bodyguard duty for the Princess of Betrovia, as she and her entourage are in London delivering a letter that contains clues to the secret location of a chess queen. The chess queen is said to unlock a compartment in the chess board that holds an unnamed treasure. However, the letter (which will also heal a feud between Britain and Betrovia) is stolen during a party, and the girls must hurry to find it before the Ankh does.

I have to say that each book brings a new theme to the Holmes and Stoker world. The first book was pure mystery and, I feel, centered around Mina Holmes. The second was paranormal and the clearly Evaline Stoker's purview. This third one, however, was political and had interesting subplots for both Mina and Evaline. As the second book indicated, Mina's mother was also Evaline's mentor. It is clear the girls haven't discussed this new revelation, as it is also clear that the girls still haven't learned how to work together. That last part is the reason I took a point off. There were many times I stopped to clear my own frustration with the girls, because they essentially were working against one another. However, the fact that I did get that emotionally involved just proves how well written the novel was.

The fourth book will be coming out soon and I simply can't wait.
