Circle of Magic by Tamora Pierce

The Circle of Magic series was introduced to me by my Aunt. It's funny, most of my early adventures were encouraged by my father's side of the family. I don't know if that's just because I made Christmas and birthdays easier, or if they genuinely cared, but either way I am very grateful. As far as childhood goes, I obviously read this series before Harry Potter and Trisana Chandler was my soul sister.

This particular series follows four young children who have been abandoned, lost, and/or ignored by the people around them. Each was tested at a young age for magic, and each was told they had one. However, their magic was buried deep within them, and only the most skillful of mages has been able to find it. Sandry, Tris, Daja, and Briar are taken to the Living Circle Temple, to Discipline Cottage, where they will meet their teachers and explore their new power. Along with that exploration comes earthquakes, pirates, fires, plagues, and maybe a few snarky Dedicates. What lives they will lead.

Tris is obviously my favorite novel (its the second in the series) but Briar's is the saddest by far. All, however, are well written and perfect for a lonely child. Each novel is fast paced, and keeps teaching the mages as well as the reader more and more about ambient magic, or magic within. There are lessons in confidence, manners, and of course discipline.

I can't get enough of these novels, and will one day read them to my children as well as my niece and nephews. 5 out of 5 stars.
