Veronica Speedwell has returned with her partner in crime, Stoker. Two of my recent favorite literary characters. I know it seems like it doesn't take a lot to please me, but I usually try really hard to relax and enjoy each new read. However, there are very few reasons to not like this series.
Veronica and Stoker are informed about Stoker's former expedition partner having gone missing along with a priceless diadem under suspicious circumstances. Unfortunately, the only witness is the victim's wife, and she has been sequestered away by her parents. Sir Hugo has asked Veronica and Stoker to investigate the case discreetly, as the results could affect Stoker personally. Now the Egyptian God, Anubis, is wandering the streets of London looking for the Egyptian princess's diadem.
I'm torn between which Templeton-Vane brother I would like to see Veronica with, Stoker or Tiberius. I think Stoker will provide Veronica with the mental stimulation she clearly needs, but Tiberius can provide her with the understanding of her open-minded behavior. Both (as she points out in the book) can provide her with other types of stimulation and adventure. One thing in this particular novel that I wanted to scream over was Stoker's self-pity. It seems like he takes twelve steps backwards in regards to character development. I just need him to figure out that he can move past everything, and Veronica should not have to hold his hand until he does.
I also admire the way Deanna Raybourn built Veronica's character. She's strong, witty, and courageous. She can investigate her own familial past, but continue to stand as they treat her unjustly. If I had been her, I would have smacked quite a few people in this novel before walking away. She knows what she wants and lets nothing stand in the way.
Overall I rate this novel 5 out of 5 stars. And I cannot wait for next month when A Dangerous Collaboration is published.
