Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling, Illustrated by Jim Kay

Again, there's images are GORGEOUS!!! If I didn't believe it would completely ruin the book then I would pin these pages all over the walls of my home. Jim Kay's illustrations bring Hogwarts and its inhabitants to life in ways movies never could. I honestly feel like I have fallen into a Pensieve every time.

So the second Harry Potter novel was published in 1998, and I was 9 years old. I remember my dad saying there was a new one and bundling me into the car to get it. I think I read it from the library first because I can't remember the drive to the store like I can with Harry Potter 1. It's funny. I spent this past President's Day weekend telling my husband all about my favorite library, The Columbus Metropolitan Library in Downtown Columbus, OH. I was fascinated by the big white building, and the stairs inside. I remember there being a food cart/coffee cart right on the threshold. The grand staircase that lead up to the more "adult" books (mainly philosophy and mathematics. I was 9, ok?!). I haven't been there in years. I may have to make a trip next time. Just for old times'sake.

We didn't go often because we (my family) aren't big city people. To be honest, I'm not a big people person, but the library is my sacred place. Now as an adult I have my own in my house, and I still have all of my Harry Potters. Plus a few new ones. Chamber of Secrets is not my favorite of the series because I really didn't like Dobby. I had major issues with the fact that a Ministry of Magic couldn't tell the difference in Elf magic and wizard magic. But Dobby did everything wrong in warning Harry away, especially considering all the characteristics he "heard" about Harry. I was really disappointed in Hermione and her fangirling of Gilderoy Lockhart. But I think this was the novel that really made me question Albus Dumbledore. He seemed so irresponsible, so detached and uncaring to the situation for all of Hogwarts.

Overall I still rate the novel 5 out of 5 stars because it was well written and for all of the feelings mentioned above. Though I do have to ask, why didn't Hagrid get the chance to have a new wand when he was vindicated? Come on, Rowling. Help Hagrid out, yeah?
