The Clockmaker's Daughter by Kate Morton (Spoilers)

I was super excited to receive this book, and yet I found myself somewhat disappointed.

Kate Morton's writing is beautiful. It's flows and ebbs like a smooth river. However, the pacing of the novel was quite slow. I found myself having to stop and read another novel because I just wanted some thing to wake me up. Then there was the multiple characters' story lines. Ladies and gentleman, this is not a story just about one girl. This is multiple girls. Each is broken up and inserted at various locations that I found myself having to go back and re-read sections just to understand where that particular character was in their story-telling. The ending had no excitement, no wow factor. It was pretty much a plain ending.

I will say that I did enjoy the historical aspects which is why I kept reading it. I liked the different accounts for each era, but I also liked how each character was connected through the house. It was each girl's perspective that gave the house character, and sometimes even personality. The history behind each individual stayed true to what we as readers know about those times, but Morton's writing made it more relevant. It was definitely in those moments that the characters felt alive.

Unfortunately I had to rate this 3 out of 5 stars, because while her writing is superb and the history was wonderfully accurate, the story just didn't do much for me. I will definitely read her other books, but I think its gonna be sporadic.
