Detective Jackson Forge can hardly wait to marry the street-sly swindler who’s turned his life upside down. Kit Turner is equally excited to wed the handsome detective, and what better way to show her love than providing him with a gift any man of the law would love? She determines to bring to justice the men who years ago maimed his brother—despite Jackson’s warning to leave the past in the past. As she digs into the mystery of what happened, she unwittingly tumbles into her own history and endangers her future happiness with Jackson. (Netgalley synopsis)
Michelle Griep’s Thief of Blackfriars Lane was my first Netgalley read, so this series has a special place in my heart. Michelle Griep has an uncanny knack for visual phrases. I can imagine the characters and the places. I can also feel the emotions coming off of Kit and Jackson.
Speaking of, Kit and Jackson seem to be having some difficulties with getting married. They parry and thrust like any other couple following the “honeymoon phase”, and allow their own pride to cause many problems. At times it felt too much, some of the angst. That could just be my feelings, since I am not a fan of angsty writing.
The mysteries all flowed well together. Who is stealing trinkets and smuggle them? Who is stalking and attacking Jackson? What is young Freddie up to? And who are the bones that Kit found? And what does any of it have to do with Kit’s mother? All of these questions are answered.
I will also say that the ending feels me feeling bereft. I want to know what happened in the missing year. Maybe Michelle Griep will write the adventure in book 3?
Overall I rate this novel 3.5 out of 5 stars.
