When beloved local teacher and track coach Josh Bynum stumbles into the Secret Bookcase distressed and with no memory of the previous night, Annie's and Fletcher’s instincts tell them something doesn’t add up.
As the duo delve deeper into the tight-knit world of high school athletics, they uncover a web of secrets. Between ambitious parents, suspicious fundraising activities, and a star athlete with a lot to lose, everyone has something to hide.
Annie and Fletcher will need all their investigative skills and the support of their Redwood Grove friends if they’re to solve this mystery. Has Josh been set up? And what if there’s a clever killer somewhere in their beloved hometown—who might decide to target them next?
This mystery was very, VERY relatable. I have played in high school sports, my husband played in high school sports, and now he is a referee. There are always those ridiculous, crazy parents who believe that their child is going all the way past college sports. I remember the fund-raising the PTA did, but how the athletic director only let the money go to football or boys’ sports, even though our girls’ tennis team were the champions. I was also going to be a teacher, and I still have family members who are teachers. The pressure teachers are under to meet and/or exceed the guidelines or standards is absolutely anguishing.
Ellie Alexander is one of my go to authors, especially for cozy mysteries. I’m still a little unsure of how I feel about Annie, though. There is something almost soap opera like with her. Sometimes, I feel like she is put together, and other times I feel like “and here’s another shoe drop.” I would like to see a novel with more Fletcher involved. I wonder if having more with him would balance her out.
Overall, I rate this novel 4 out of 5 stars.
