The Hearts We Sold by Emily Lloyd-Jones

The Hearts We Sold by Emily Lloyd-Jones is a supernatural, young adult, and fantasy novel. Deidre Moreno, a.k.a. Dee, makes a fully conscious decision to trade her heart in exchange for money. Money that will help her escape a home life that leaves her wanting more. However, Dee could have never imagined the horror she waltzed into. On the plus side, she is not alone. Along her journey, Dee meets three other heartless teens, Cal, Cora, and James. While James and Dee try to survive their new experiences, something begins to grow between them. Can they truly give their hearts to one another while those same hearts are no longer their own? And how do they possibly survive the horrors along the way?

I connected with Dee on a level I didn't fully expect. I didn't have the experiences as Dee did but I did move away from a home life that was overwhelming. Dee's decision then made complete sense to me. There are things in life, as humans, we just feel the need to leave behind. To clarify, there was nothing wrong with my home life, I just wanted more. I also found Dee's built up guards with people refreshing. There are people who you have your whole life, and then there are "half friends" as Dee states. People who are around but are not who you hang out with by choice.

As for Dee's actual relationships, I found those to be completely realistic. There is the instant connection with James, which makes the reader know that they need to be together at some point. That connection with James shows the reader two different sides of Dee: the fear of opening up and a softness for those she cares for. With Gremma, Dee's roommate, there is a sisterly bond that feels lacking. With her parents, the relationship is angering and unresolved. As the story progresses, however, you see all of Dee's relationships evolve into something more.

More is the main theme that I found in the novel. The want for something more outside of the daily life with her family. More with her friends and even with James. This theme resonated with me as I, too, have felt the desire for more. Because of this I rate The Hearts We Sold a 5 out of 5 stars. Emily Lloyd-Jones has written a beautiful story that kept me wanting more. For anyone who feels this same desire, or simply enjoys a supernatural fantasy story, then I highly recommend this novel.
