Extraordinary Quests for Amateur Witches by Kayla Cottingham

I thoroughly enjoyed Extraordinary Quests for Amateur Witches. From the moment I met Kieran, I rooted for him—not just because of his ridiculous bad luck, but because his fears felt real and relatable. He begins the novel feeling overshadowed by his twin sister’s success and haunted by a family curse he barely survived. Then he accidentally curses his ex-boyfriend, takes on an impossible “Calling” to find a magical cure-all, and sets off on a full-blown quest.

Kieran knows he needs to fix the curse, but what really drives him is his fear of losing everything he has fought to keep—and his quiet longing to prove to himself, as well as everyone around him, that he is worthy. He is accompanied by his sister Briar, her girlfriend Delilah, and the compelling Sebastian. This ensemble gives the story warmth, humor, and stakes beyond just defeating a villain.

I especially loved watching Kieran grow. He starts out shaky: his magic is weak, his confidence is close to non-existent, and he struggles to find his place. However, as he navigates curses, betrayals, and self-doubt, he begins to claim his identity as a witch, a partner, a friend, and a person of worth.

Touches of nostalgia appear here and there as the novel follows characters from a previous book, Practical Rules for Cursed Witches. As a new reader of the series, I did not feel lost because Cottingham provides plenty of context within the new plot line.

Overall, I rate this novel 5 out of 5 stars.
