Carnival Fantástico by Angela Montoya

Welcome to the Carnival Fantástico, a spectacle of magic and mischief, and the perfect haven for a runaway. Using her tricks and razor-sharp wit, Esmeralda becomes the carnival's resident fortune-teller, aiming for the lead role in the Big Top Show. Success would mean freedom from her former employer, the commander of the King’s army.

Ignacio has defected from the army and is on the hunt for evidence of his father’s corruption. But the last thing he expects to find on his father’s trail of lies is the only girl he's ever loved, spinning false fortunes at a traveling carnival.

Perhaps fortune has thrown them together for a reason. They strike a deal: she’ll help him expose his father if he helps her secure the main act. But old feelings don’t die easily, and the commander’s secret isn’t the only thing they'll need to confront.

Carnival Fantástico by Angela Montoya is a lush, immersive fantasy novel that blends magical realism, romance, and high-stakes adventure into an unforgettable reading experience. Set against the backdrop of a mysterious traveling carnival, Carnival Fantástico delivers vivid world-building, atmospheric prose, and a story steeped in family secrets and forbidden magic. Readers who love character-driven fantasy with emotional depth will find plenty to savor.

At the heart of the novel is Esmeralda, a complex and deeply flawed heroine. It admittedly took me a while to warm up to her. Early on, she comes across as overly harsh and even hypocritical, often judging others while wrestling with her own questionable choices. However, as the story unfolds, those sharp edges reveal layers of vulnerability, grief, and fierce determination.

Angela Montoya crafts a spellbinding tale filled with intrigue, identity, and destiny. Carnival Fantástico is a richly imagined fantasy novel perfect for fans of magical carnivals, strong heroines, and emotionally charged storytelling.

Overall, I rate this novel 4 out of 5 stars.
